The final project for my first year studio was to focus on designing a piece that transformed light in some way. I wanted to create something that offered a unique experience as well as remaining practical for everyday use.
Hexo Light is a fixture that emits a different color light based on the sound intensity of the room in which it may be placed. The amount of light that is emitted is also dependent upon the size of the room.
Utilizing multiple arduino microcontrollers, a servo motor, and other electronics, I was able to craft this fixture. Using woodworking machines and techniques, I was able to craft a custom made plate that sat below a servo motor and allowed for the turning of each individual panel. Using arduino’s sound detection sensor module, I was able to set threshold values that would emit a different color for various ranges. Using arduino’s ultrasonic range finder and a servo motor, I was able to program the fixture so that panels would spin to emit more or less light based on the size of the room in which it is placed.
